Gidi City: The Vibes, My Expressions.
The bright orange street lights and shinning headlights of vehicles
That zoom back and forth on the express roads at night
Or the the varying sounds of car horns that blare at each other
The lousy touts, traffic wardens and citizens who go about their everyday business.
Beautiful colors used to decorate and paint both the bodies, places and faces of gidi people
Some shabby, some admirable, some formal and some without an adjective
Hitting and brushing shoulders against shoulders in the very much crowdie environment
There are the people who scream or shout to attract consumers to their market
There are also those who hawk from one point to another to make profitable sales
Another gidi people are the ones who hurl insults at passers-by for not acknowledging them
Or those who harass the bus drivers for not being obedient to the rules governing them.
When it comes to lifestyle, gidi is the center of it all with both the attractive and not so attractive ones
The meeting point is the ‘center of excellency’ otherwise known as gidi
Where diversity of cultures and ethnic groups meet and interrelate with each other
Because there is no choice of who your neighbor is
Not only does this city boost unity and friendliness, it also encourages accommodation
In that there are some unacceptable norms and display of attitudes as an individual that has to be tolerated as a gidi citizen
The transport system also defines the state and identity of the government
The bus commonly referred to as ‘Molue’ among the people are painted black and yellow signifies Peace and Justice
Taxi that is painted blue, green and red with the Lagos State government logo shows the identity of gidi government
While the train station shows the disarray and dark state of the government slowly coming into light and order.
The relationship among the people is simply one of understanding and tolerance
Ignoring the absurdity and shallowness that grows as a weed among them.
Gidi is also ‘gidi up’ because it bubbles night and day with events, ceremonies, activities among several other social responsibilities
The vigor of gidi city is the people, the lifestyle, the adventure, the street, the food, the diversity of culture and ethnic group
Although Gidi city, which I fondly call Lagos City is just a small part of Africa
It is a huge representative of what it means to be African
And a child of our Mother Land, that is, Africa.
